Award-winning kwaito sensation Brickz is likely to spend Christmas in jail after the Roodepoort Magistrates' Court refused him bail this morning.

Handing down judgement, Magistrate Piet Kotze said after careful consideration of the information before him, he was convinced that Brickz would evade trial if granted bail.

He also said Brickz would interfere with investigations and intimidate state witnesses if granted bail.

"Bail is denied," he said.

Kotze postponed the case to December 5.

When Brickz walked back into the holding cells, his relatives wept uncontrollably and slowly walked out of the court room, hiding their faces as photographers jostled to take their pictures.

Brickz's lawyer, Isaac Mokgobi, said they would appeal the verdict.

"We are shocked by the verdict and we are appealing against the judgment. We believe the magistrate erred and the appeal court will arrive at a different conclusion," he said.
