Citizens to ride along with cops on anti-crime patrols

2013-05-13 09:23

Capetonians will soon be able to accompany metro police and other law enforcement officials on anti-crime patrols.

Members of the public would be able to accompany the city’s metro police, law enforcement, traffic police, disaster risk management and fire and emergency services, the Cape Times reported today.

Safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith told the newspaper the programme, which did not include the police, had been approved by the city’s safety and security directorate.

He said the policy of “ride-alongs” was based on best practice from overseas.

People over 18, with no criminal record, could apply. Minors could participate if a waiver was signed by their parents or guardians.

Smith said the programme aimed to narrow the credibility gap between the public and law enforcement, and to recruit youth considering a career in law enforcement.
