Classic soapies cancelled

2011-04-15 07:20

Los Angeles – The daytime soap opera, a staple format of American television for decades, is on life support.

ABC announced yesterday that it was cancelling two more classic soap operas All My Children in September and One Life to Live in January.

The series are among the longest-running shows on television – All My Children started in 1970 and One Life to Live in 1968 – but have fallen victim to the popularity of cheaper-to-produce reality shows, the flight of viewers to the internet and the relentless pace of modern life, which leaves fewer people with time to watch TV in the middle of the day.

ABC will replace the dramas with a food show and a health and lifestyle reality series, in what network executive Brian Fronis said was a “bittersweet moment”.

“We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days,” he said.

The decision comes after a spate of earlier cancellations, which leaves CBS as the only network with more than one daytime soap opera on its schedule, as it continues to screen The Young and the Restless and The Bold and The Beautiful.
