Closed proceedings: Arms deal commission turns down Crawford-Browne objection

2013-08-20 12:29

Anti-arms deal activist Terry Crawford-Browne’s application, objecting to in camera proceedings of the arms deal commission, has been turned down.

Yesterday afternoon, Crawford-Browne submitted a letter that chairperson Judge Willie Seriti addressed this morning.

Terry Crawford-Browne letter of objection

Crawford-Browne was allowed to read through his letter, but when he started making amendments to it, Seriti said he was simply rehashing allegations that are already in his statement before the commission.

Responding to Crawford-Browne’s letter, evidence leader Moosa Mpaga called him an opportunist.

“The applicant has made far-reaching allegations in his application ... that is why the commission has been set up to find the evidence,” said Mpaga in his rebuttal.

Mpaga said the people who were alleged to be implicated also deserved a platform to clear their names.

Crawford-Browne said he was acting in the public interest.

His application was later denied by Seriti, stating that there was no basis for the application.

Also this morning, the legal representation for former president Thabo Mbeki and the Cabinet members who have been called to testify withdrew.
