‘Cloud’ over new Gauteng top cop: DA wants clarity

2013-08-31 13:31

There was a "potential cloud" over the head of newly appointed Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Bethuel Zuma, the DA has said.

"The national police commissioner must clarify whether it is in fact Zuma who was arrested on a raft of charges related to an alleged drunk driving incident in December 2008," Kate Lorimer said.

"We are concerned about this appointment and the potential cloud over Zuma's head, particularly given the work done by his immediate predecessor, Mzwandile Petros."

Lorimer said Zuma was also allegedly charged with failing to comply with the instructions of a traffic officer, escaping custody and defeating the ends of justice after he prevented officers from taking a blood alcohol sample.

The outcome of the charges and case remained uncertain as the trial was postponed last year February, she said.

"The DA will study the implications of the appointment and comment in greater detail at the appropriate time.

"However, until the cloud is lifted over Zuma's head, we do not believe that his appointment is in the best interest of justice and policing in Gauteng," said Lorimer.

National commissioner Riah Phiyega announced Zuma's appointment as new Gauteng police commissioner in Pretoria earlier on Saturday.

"Lieutenant General Zuma has 20 years experience as a policeman," Phiyega told reporters.

"He worked his ranks up in the police from constable to major general."

According to tweets, Phiyega was unaware of the charges against Zuma.
