Michael Lowman may be a newbie on the scene but he’s a pro at adding colour to life with his music.

The 26-year-old singer/songwriter is riding a wave of success after releasing his debut album, Crayon Boxes, and seeing his hit single, ‘Your Lovin’ Ain’t Right’, whizz up the charts.

Despite being a new kid on the block, Michael has already enjoyed some international success.

In 2009 he went to Las Vegas and was signed to indie label Authentik Artists, recording songs that were geared towards TV syncs – and one of them, ‘The One For You’, landed up on Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami. ‘That was an amazing experience,’ he recalls.

‘Having my song on a show that big gave me the validation I needed to do music as a full-time career. I also made some really great contacts when I was in the US.’

He had to come back home because of visa issues but that did nothing to slow him down. His music attracted record label Universal and he went about creating his first album.

So why the name Crayon Boxes? ‘I see sounds as colours; I have since I was a kid. It’s how I differentiate genres.

This album has a whole range of colours – there’s everything from pop to blues-inspired music on it, and it reminded me of crayon boxes with a mixture of colours in them.’

And speaking of colours, his feeling for them extends beyond music – he designed the artwork for his album cover too. ‘I can’t draw to save my life,’ he insists, ‘but I’ve always had a specific goal when it comes to art. I’m constantly learning and changing as an artist, so things are always interesting for me.’

• Crayon Boxes is on CD and iTunes (which has three bonus tracks and 16 pages of his artwork).
