Comedian halts marathons for Mandela

2012-05-25 10:27

British comedian Eddie Izzard has been forced to end his attempt to complete 27 marathons in 27 consecutive days in honour of Nelson Mandela, who was jailed for 27 years by the apartheid government before being released to help usher in South Africa’s democracy.

He had already completed 4 marathons across South Africa. “I am very sorry to let everyone down, but I have had to stop running,” he tweeted to his nearly 2.5 million followers early yesterday.

His tweet linked to his Facebook page where he gave further details: “I have had to put my attempt on hold due to unforeseen medical complications that have arisen due to a multitude of factors including severe terrain, humidity and altitude.”

He went on to say that this hurdle did not mark the end of his campaign and that he intends to return to South Africa to complete the 27 marathons and “finish this story”.

“I owe that to Nelson Mandela who has inspired the world to struggle and succeed no matter what obstacles are thrown at us,” he wrote.

In 2009, Izzard ran 1 770km in seven weeks across Britain for charity.

Izzard has been documenting his extraordinary journey across South Africa via social media, posting photographs and updates via his Twitter, Whosay and Facebook accounts.

His last update before the announcement was a photograph taken at sunset from the top of Signal Hill in Cape Town, posted on Whosay on Monday.
