Coming soon: NakedNews!

2010-04-25 11:32

INTERNATIONAL news service NakedNews, whose presenters strip naked

while reading the headlines, is coming to South Africa.

It’s not quite the naked truth, but for NakedNews Africa’s first

anchor, Johannesburg-based Amy-Leigh Murphy* (34), it’s close enough.

“I have a passion for news and a beautiful body. I read very well,”

she says about joining the service as its first South African anchor.

The subscription-based service, which is available online

(www.nakednews.co.za) and on cellphones (at R10 per week), is set to launch its

first locally produced news clip, presented by Murphy, by May 7.

About 50 hopefuls have auditioned to date. The plan is to increase

the number of anchors to five in the near future.

Spokesperson Melissa Douman says NakedNews will eventually add male

presenters. But these anchors will not strip completely. “Full-frontal male

nudity is not very neat. They would, for example, wear a sexy G-string or

Jockey.”

Anchors typically strip while they read the news, but they don’t

bare all in every bulletin.

“It beats watching Riaan Cruywagen on SABC2 any day,” quips

Douman.

Despite the recent uproar about the possible inclusion of adult

content on the DStv platform, Douman believes the time is right to launch

NakedNews because South Africans “have become quite liberal in their

thinking”.

“This is not porn. We don’t use anchors that have been involved

with strip clubs or the porn industry.

“It’s a tongue-in-cheek way of presenting the news. The aim is not

to cause arousal.”

NakedNews Africa might approach a South African television channel

in the long run if research shows that the market is big enough. “We have spoken

to e.tv, but nothing has been formalised,” says Douman.

NakedNews Africa has 1 000 “loyal” subscribers. The aim is to grow

this number to 500 000 within two years. Additional revenue will be derived

from advertising,” says Douman. “We’re looking for a variety of anchors. You

don’t have to be thin, tall or blonde – but you have to be comfortable and

content in your own skin,” she says.

Murphy clearly is. “I run around in a bikini when it’s hot. I’m not

afraid of being naked or half-naked.” But she admits to finding the shoots

nerve-racking.

“I am human,” she laughs.

As for the reaction of friends and family members, she says most of

them laugh and a few – male and female – have promised to subscribe.

“They know me. I’m a bit eccentric. They accept me for who I am.”

Does she expect to be taken seriously? “I

think you can deliver something with class and dignity with your clothes on or

off.”

Not her real name. It is NakedNews policy to use

pseudonyms for anchors
