Commission blasts cops over Tatane

2012-10-31 11:29

Police used a degree of force during a Free State protest in April last year that was disproportionate to the circumstances of the case, thus violating Andries Tatane’s right to life, the SA Human Rights Commission has said.

The commission today released its finding into the killing of Tatane at the hands of several police officers during a service-delivery protest in Ficksburg.

The commission also found that officers’ training must be improved in order to effectively manage future violent protests.

“SAPS were not suitably equipped to quell public disorder and failed, within the circumstances, to devise a plan to monitor the gathering,” the commission said.

Commissioner Danny Titus had harsh words for the police when he said: “It is worrying that the police arrogantly refused to cooperate in this and other matters involving the [SA Police Service].”

Responding to the report, the Council for the Advancement of the Constitution said in a statement that Parliament must urgently consider the commission’s findings “and exercise meaningful oversight over the executive and a seemingly unaccountable police service”.
