Team SA’s quest for gold in athletics will continue tonight.

Track and field athletes bagged four medals in three finals last night – plus Mpho Madi’s wrestling bronze – to take South Africa’s total to 31 medals after Day 7.

The team snatched a 2-3 finish in the long jump after Zarck Visser (silver) and Rushwahl Samaai (bronze) led the way for Sunette Viljoen (silver, javelin) and Wayde van Niekerk (silver, 200m).

Tonight, André Olivier will line up in the 800m final, Cornel Fredericks in the 400m hurdles final and Victor Hogan in the discus final as South Africa make a bid to move up from seventh position on the medal table ranking.

There is a potential representation for Team SA in the 200m final if Van Niekerk, Akani Simbine and Ncincilili Titi advance in their respective semifinals tonight.

Also taking part in a medal event today are Ashleigh Moolman and Heidi Dalton who will be carrying the country’s hopes in the women’s road cycling individual time trial contest.
