The woman allegedly shot dead by Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is believed to be his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.

A close family friend confirmed to City Press that it was Steenkamp who died early this morning in Pistorius’s luxury Pretoria home, saying the family was “devastated”.

Hundreds of messages of condolence streamed in on Twitter where Steenkamp had an active account.

She described herself as an “SA Model, Cover Girl, Tropika Island of Treasure Celeb Contestant, Law Graduate, Child of God”.

Yesterday afternoon, Steenkamp tweeted: “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay.”

It is believed Pistorius told police that he had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder.

He was still being questioned by police and was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court later today.
