According to the New York Times today, local comic Trevor Noah will be the new host of The Daily Show.

Noah will be succeeding Jon Stewart, who has hosted the late-night talk and news satire television show for the past 16 years. It’s the biggest international breakthrough for a South African comedian.

Noah made his debut as a correspondent on the show in 2013 when he came on for a short segment and spoke about American ignorance, the fact that Africa isn’t a country and his visit to the United States.

Last week it was announced that Noah was on the shortlist to host the show.

“You don’t believe it for the first few hours,” he told the New York Times.

“You need a stiff drink, and then unfortunately you’re in a place where you can’t really get alcohol.”

“I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor,” said Stewart.

“He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with.”

Stewart added that he “may rejoin as a correspondent just to be a part of it!!!”

The Daily Show is arguably one of the most successful comedy talk shows on TV, and the appointment cements Noah as a bona-fide comedian with international appeal. With his new appointment, the 31-year-old moves back to his television roots (his first role was on soap opera Isidingo in 2002, when he was 18).
