Cop hurt, 12 strikers arrested

A policeman was injured and 12 strikers were arrested at the Church Street bus depot in Pretoria today, the Gauteng community safety department said.

The incident occurred when striking members of the waste management service joined bus service strikers in the bus depot, said spokesperson William Baloyi.

The police arrived and asked the strikers to leave, but when they refused rubber bullets were fired. Baloyi said the situation was brought under control.

One metro policeman was injured in the incident and 12 strikers were arrested.

“Sporadic” disruptions were expected from the striking municipal workers throughout the day, he said.

Intimidation of non-striking workers at Pretoria West waste collection depot this morning were also quelled by metro police.

“We remain on alert because sporadic incidents are expected throughout the day, but the situation is under control,” he said.

Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union spokesperson, Simon Riekert, said yesterday that the union was not participating in any further strike action.

SA Municipal Workers Union could not immediately be reached for comment.
