Cop in court for rape

2010-05-13 15:11

A reservist police sergeant arrested for allegedly raping a

21-year-old woman in a police vehicle appeared in the Ottosdal magistrate’s

court today.

A court official said the case against the 31-year-old man was

postponed to May 20 for a bail application.

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said the woman had

been arrested and taken to the Ottosdal police station following a fight with

her aunt in Letsopa township on Saturday.

ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the woman was allegedly slapped

in the face with an open hand by an officer on duty at the station.

Dlamini said: “The officer then reprimanded her for the fight she

had had with her aunt and ordered that she be taken home.”

On the way to the girl’s home, the officer allegedly stopped the

car, ordered the woman to undress and threatened her when she refused to do

so.

He allegedly raped the woman before taking her to his house and

keeping her there overnight.

The woman escaped the next day and told her mother,

who reported the incident to the ICD office in North West. – Sapa
