Three men were sentenced in the Harrismith High Court yesterday on charges of killing a Phuthaditjhaba police inspector and two women, Free State police said.

Mohlafamo Mokoena (22) Moeketsi Radebe (29) Moabi Morapedi (35) and a fourth man, Jan Radebe (22) were also found guilty of the attempted murders of two other men.

Mokoena was given three life sentences for murder and 25 years for robbery and attempted murder.

Moeketsi Radebe and Morapedi were each sentenced to 35 years for murder, robbery and attempted murder. Jan Radebe got 18 months for possession of stolen property.

Inspector Ike Mokoena was working at the Phuthaditjhaba criminal record centre and a businessman at the time of his murder. He was shot near his business premises.

The accused had asked him to drive them to Phuthaditjhaba Hotel. On their way they shot him and took his car. His body was later found near the Reyahola School. His vehicle was found burned in Thabang village, Qwaqwa.

In a separate crime, three of the accused hijacked and shot and killed two women. They also shot and wounded two other men.

They were arrested in May and June 2009.
