Cop kills Diepsloot robber

2011-06-16 14:31

An off-duty police officer shot and killed an armed robber who shot at him first in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, shortly after midnight this morning, Gauteng police said.

“The deceased, a foreign national, was allegedly part of a group of seven men who attacked patrons at a local tavern about an hour earlier,” said Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela.

During the attack two patrons, aged 37 and 40, were shot dead and the men stole cellphones and cash.

The men then stopped a Toyota Corolla and stole a cellphone and cash from a passenger while the driver ran away.

A police officer sleeping in his nearby home was awoken by noise and decided to investigate, Mavimbela explained.

“He got into his private car and drove around ... he saw the Corolla and heard what had happened from the passenger who was still there.

“He then noticed a group of men and drove towards them.”

The group scattered but one of the men pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the police officer.

“While he was driving the constable shot the suspect in the upper body. The suspect collapsed and died on the scene.”

A police handgun and two cellphones believed to have been discarded by the men as they ran away, were recovered from the scene.

“It is believed that this group is behind a spate of street, house and business robberies in Diepsloot recently,” Mavimbela said.

Cases of businesses being robbed, attempted murder and murder are being investigated.
