Cop shoots Joburg motorist

2011-08-20 12:47

A Fordsburg man was shot by Metro police in an apparent road rage incident, Johannesburg Metro police said today.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the man, who was driving a white Golf, had followed a red Golf that had cut him off in peak hour traffic yesterday on Barry Hertzog Avenue.

When he caught up to the vehicle he drew his gun and smashed the car windows.

The man (29) then pointed his gun at the two occupants of the other Golf, who turned out to be Metro policemen in plain clothes driving an unmarked car.

“After he broke the window with his firearm and then pointed the firearm at the officers the suspect was shot in his right leg,” Minnaar said.

He said the man would be charged with attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

“We will also conduct a criminal investigation as well as a departmental investigation,” said Minnaar.
