Cop, suspect killed in a shoot-out

Gauteng police have confirmed that a police reservist and another person were killed in a shoot-out in Northcliff, Johannesburg, today.

Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, who was on the scene, said Fairlands police tried to stop a white Mercedes-Benz which had aroused suspicions at about 11.30am this morning.

The car drove off and the police followed.

The Mercedes was involved in an accident and five men jumped out of the car, Dlamini said.

One of the men was arrested about three meters from the car while the second ran into a house on Acacia Road.

A shoot-out ensued between him and a police reservist. Both died. Other two men ran into a neighbouring house.

One of the men shot himself in the head, but was still alive, Dlamini said. The other man was arrested.

The fifth man was arrested further down the road.

Five firearms – five revolvers and a pistol – were recovered, Dlamini said.

The leafy Johannesburg suburb was abuzz with activity as residents stood on the corner trying to see what was happening.

The road was cordoned-off with yellow police tape.

Ambulances transporting those who were injured left the scene.

Police were still investigating the incident.

Residents of the two houses did not want to speak to the media.

Floris Esterhuizen, who lives next to one of the houses, said it was like a “wild west show”.

He said he was busy in the house when he heard gun shots coming from the back. “When I first heard the shots I thought it was fire crackers but realised it wasn’t.”

Esterhuizen said he heard shots from the front of the house.

When he went to look, he saw children who were playing on a tennis court at the school across the road lying down on the court. “It then went quiet.”

“The next thing I heard Rosie (a domestic worker) next door screaming ‘help, help, help’.

“They were trying to break-in to get away from the police. I told her to lie down.”

Esterhuizen said he had been talking to the police officer who was killed when police were searching for the suspects. “It was happening all around me.”
