Three people, including a baby, were shot dead in a robbery at Randridge Mall in Johannesburg, Gauteng police have said.

A fourth person, a policeman, was killed in a shootout during a chase that ensued, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

At 10.30am today, five armed men entered a jewellery store at the mall and held the staff at gunpoint before stealing jewellery.

Dlamini said a 56-year-old manager and a one-and-half-year-old baby were shot in their necks.

Another 47-year-old man was shot in the stomach. All three died.

The gang fled in a bakkie. Police gave chase and a police officer was killed during a shootout, said Dlamini.

A short while later, the getaway vehicle lost control and crashed. One robber, who was found injured inside the bakkie, was arrested. A second robber was apprehended after he was tracked with a police dog.

Two others were found hiding in a house and handcuffed. The fifth robber escaped and was being sought by police.

Police seized three bags of jewellery and two firearms.
