Copenhagen - Church praises Zuma

2009-12-10 11:54

Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba on Thursday praised President

Jacob Zuma for representing South Africa at the Conference on Climate Change in

Copenhagen.

‘‘On behalf of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa, I am

heartened to see that you will be attending the Conference on Climate Change in

Copenhagen,” read an extract of a letter the church sent to Zuma.

‘‘Your input can be of great importance, especially as issues

around ecological debt and eco-justice are key for the developing world and need

to be raised by an African leader in particular.”

The church highlighted the need to decrease emissions and to

consider moving towards renewable forms of energy like solar energy, instead of

coal and nuclear.

‘‘Today moving to the use of renewable forms of energy is not a

luxury or experimental - it is necessary.

‘‘South Africa is blessed with abundant sources of renewable energy

-here we can be a leader in Africa and encourage others to follow.”
