Cops clash with ANC supporters

2014-02-12 13:21

Police have clashed with ANC supporters in the Joburg CBD while protecting the DA’s retreat from the city centre.

The clash took place outside the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, where police used stun grenades against ANC supporters who were headed toward the DA march.

Protesters threw rocks back at the police as well as at least two petrol bombs.

The swift arrival of more police officers on the scene defused the situation, with the ANC supporters retreating back toward Luthuli House.

The DA’s march, scheduled to end on Beyers Naude Square, never came closer than three city blocks from their destination or Luthuli House, around which thousands of ANC supporters had thronged.

As the DA retreated back towards the parking lot where their buses and vehicles were parked, ANC supporters moved down parallel streets, taunting them.

Many were carrying rocks, bricks and sticks.

Ahead of the march ANC treasurer Zweli Mkhize told supporters “this is your house, this is not the house of the DA”.

He added: “How can [the DA] say they are not going to our head office but you want to come to the same street.”

Both Mkhize and the party’s deputy secretary-general, Jessie Duarte, said the ANC would not be provoked to conflict.

Calm had been restored to the area by midday.
