Cops mum on German camp security

2010-04-23 10:48

The police refused to confirm a reported request that the German

football team ditch its booking at a hotel in Pretoria due to “security

concerns”.

Spokeswoman Nonkululeko Mbatha referred questions to the Tshwane

municipality.

The

Times reported that the police, the National Intelligence Agency and the

defence force had asked the German team to cancel its World Cup booking at

Velmore Hotel.

The hotel in Erasmia, south-west of Pretoria, was booked last year

as a base for the German team.

The paper reported that the building plans for the four-star hotel

were not approved by the municipality. The municipality’s spokesperson was not

immediately available for comment.

Velmore Hotel general manager Heinz Mulder told the newspaper that

its owner, Emil Keyser, had invested about R80 million in a new 48-room building

especially for the German team.

He was quoted as saying there was “no going back now” and that the

German squad was “definitely staying here”.

“They will be here for the duration of the tournament. They chose

Velmore because of its exclusivity. We will cater for their needs,” he said.
