Cops recover stolen paintings worth R2m

2010-11-18 10:28

Three paintings, including an Irma Stern, worth R2 million in total were stolen from a Hout Bay property, but were recovered within 24 hours, an art insurer said today.

“At 3.30pm yesterday afternoon, I got a phone call from a client to advise me that three of his paintings had been stolen in Hout Bay,” said Artinsure managing director Gordon Massie.

“The three paintings included one by Irma Stern and the value was somewhere in the region of R2 million.”

Massie said his recovery agents, working alongside the police, started investigating the theft.

He said: “At 3.30am the owner received a phone call from the Hout Bay police to inform him that the paintings may be on the point of recovery.”

At 6am today, Massie was informed that the paintings, including Stern’s Still Life with Fish, had been recovered and had not been damaged.

“A suspect is in custody. They found the paintings in the Hout Bay region.”

Massie said he could not give details on the incident and the owner wanted to remain anonymous.

The police could not immediately confirm the incident.
