Cops take 50 taxis off the road

2010-11-02 08:58

Johannesburg’s metro police escorted 50 taxis to the Marlboro testing station today for roadworthiness tests, spokesperson Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

This was as a result of a crackdown following numerous complaints from motorists who use the R55 near Kyalami.

Minnaar said that they also fined 50 motorists – “some in expensive sedans” – for driving along the shoulder of the road.

The passengers in the taxis being taken for tests were placed in other taxis to continue their journey.

The metro police plan more moves like this in line with Operation Nomakanjani (“No matter what”).

Taxis which fail the roadworthiness test have to be taken for repairs and put through the test again.

The drivers are also fined for putting an unroadworthy vehicle on the road.
