Correctional services halts Becker’s parole bid

2014-12-06 13:26

The department of correctional services today confirmed that it had managed to temporarily halt the release of convicted killer Christoff Becker.

Becker’s lawyers made an urgent parole application in the High Court in Pretoria and the court granted Becker parole this week.

“The department, however, launched an application for leave to appeal the court ruling yesterday,” said department spokesperson Logan Maistry.

“The effect of the application means Becker will remain in custody.”

He said Becker’s parole had been suspended pending the outcome of the appeal.

Maistry could not give further details of the case, stating that it was sub-judice.

It was unclear when the matter would return to court. The so-called Waterkloof Four – Becker, Frikkie du Preez, Gert van Schalkwyk and Reinach Tiedt – were convicted for killing a homeless man in Pretoria in 2001.

They were released on February 11.

Becker and Du Preez’s parole was later revoked when a video emerged of the pair allegedly drinking alcohol and using a cellphone at the Kgosi Mampuru prison where they were serving their sentence.

The pair was sent back to prison on February 28.

This was not Becker’s first attempt at getting parole since his re-arrest.
