Cosatu lodges complaints over Zille airtime

2010-09-21 07:24

Cosatu says it has lodged complaints with two watchdog bodies following Western Cape Premier Helen Zille’s admission that her administration has paid for radio airtime.

The union federation said yesterday it had asked both the SA Human Rights Commission and the Public Protector to look into the matter.

It said spending the money on “self-promoting” shows on Heart FM was scandalous when there were such desperate needs in health, housing and education.

It was a “violation of the human rights” of the citizens of the Western Cape.

Zille’ admission earlier this month came a week after the Democratic Alliance attacked the SABC for seeking to sell a slot to the province on a current affairs programme.

She said her administration, first in the City of Cape Town, then in the province, paid a local radio station for an hour slot every first Monday of the month.

Total cost to the city and province would be R2.2 million over three years. However, she insisted the broadcasts were not party-political and dealt with service delivery issues.
