Union federation Cosatu’s central executive committee meeting has adjourned for lunch but union presidents and secretaries have remained behind to thrash out issues over credentials.

City Press understands that the meeting in Cosatu House in Braamfontein, Joburg, is yet to get under way while the committee is trying to agree on who should be there and who shouldn’t. Only unions in good standing may attend.

This could be a deciding factor in which way the meeting would go, as some unions favour Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi while others want to see him weakened or expelled.

The special meeting, which started at 11am this morning, was called to decide Vavi’s fate after he admitted to having sex with a woman he appointed to work at Cosatu’s headquarters.

He is faced with a charge of bringing the organisation into disrepute and for abusing his power.

The mood at the meeting this morning was jovial, but it masked an underlying tension as Vavi’s fate could be decided today.
