Cosatu proposes strike suspension

2011-03-15 12:37

The taxi industry in Western Cape should suspend its strike for a month, and provincial government should desist from impounding taxis, the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) said today.

This would allow negotiations to continue without inconveniencing commuters, Cosatu spokesperson Tony Ehrenreich said in a statement.

“Cosatu demands that an urgent meeting between the parties be held today to work out the logistics, and that the suspension is announced today,” Ehrenreich said.

The labour federation said it would consider strike action should the provincial government not agree to this.

The strike by SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) members was to protest against the red tape and “sloppiness” around the issuing of operating licences by the provincial government and to protest against “draconian” traffic laws.

Santaco secretary general Philip Taaibosch said authorities regularly impounded taxis without good reason.

He said that it was the responsibility of the provincial government and the city of Cape Town to provide public transport to communities.

Cosatu criticised the “high handed” approach of Western Cape transport MEC Robin Carlisle and called for his removal.
