Cosatu’s Vavi elected unopposed

2012-09-17 12:40

The expected battle over Cosatu leadership at the elective congress in Midrand failed to materialise.

The current leadership of Cosatu was re-elected unopposed this afternoon, putting paid to speculation that the leadership battle in the federation would be fierce.

Only the federation’s deputy president, Tyotyo James, could have faced a contest, but the nominee deputy president, Nomvula Hadi, failed to get enough support from the affiliates to stand.

As a result, Tyotyo was re-elected unopposed.

An independent electoral commission official said Sidumo Dlamini had also been re-elected, as was second deputy president Zingiswa Losi, general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, his deputy, Bheki Ntshalintshali and treasurer Freda Oosthuysen.

As other unions celebrated the outcome, Numsa delegates sat still on their chairs.

Police union Popcru called for the nominations process to be re-opened, but the proposal was rejected.

ANC president Jacob Zuma thanked the delegates for avoiding a bitter leadership contest.
