Couple found brutally murdered

2010-10-15 08:49

A married couple was found brutally murdered in their home on a smallholding outside Still Bay, Western Cape.

The bodies of Jan Benjamin Brits Smith (62) and Elizabeth Ann Smith (57) were found yesterday by a friend of the family who went to check on the couple as they were not answering their telephone, said Captain Malcolm Pojie.

“When she [the family friend] arrived at their home, she noticed through the window that the body of the lady was in the lounge with a garden-fork stuck in her chest. She immediately called the police,” he said.

The woman’s body was found tied up in the lounge and the man’s body was in the bedroom.

“The house was in total disarray, which made us believe that the motive could be robbery.”

Pojie said it was not clear if anything had been stolen.

Further investigation revealed that intruders possibly gained entrance through a window next to the garage.

The provincial organised crime investigation unit in George, which is part of the Hawks, was conducting the investigation.

A 35-year-old man from Riversdale was brought in by the investigating group for questioning late last night.

A murder docket had been opened and police were offering a reward to anyone with information, Pojie said.

People could contact Captain Mawetu Kobese on 082 5594 628 and Warrant Officer Gerhard Roux on 084 6573 216 with any information.
