Couple jailed for killing lover

2011-05-17 14:34

A man and wife were jailed by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday for the 2007 murder of her lover, the father of her three-year-old daughter.

Judge Piet Koen sentenced Kalisha Rajcoomar (24) to 18 years in jail and her husband Amith Sewkarran (26) to 14 years for murdering Sandesh Poorun (26).

He said Rajcoomar and Poorun were in a relationship from the time he was 19 and she was 15 and she had wanted to marry him.

Poorun would not accept the responsibility of marriage or fatherhood, but there was evidence that he did not want anyone else to have her.

He often harassed Rajcoomar and Sewkarran, so much that she obtained court protection orders against him.

He ignored them, but when a police officer asked her whether she wanted him arrested for disobeying the court order she said no.

Koen said that Poorun had the pleasure of fathering a child and the enjoyment of an affair, but would not accept the responsibilities.

Sewkarran had loved Rajcoomar and still loved her despite her affairs with Poorun.

He accepted Poorun’s child as his own. In his evidence, he tried to protect her.

Poorun died after Rajcoomar lured him to a lodge and made him drunk.

While he lay on a bed, the couple decided to strangle him, which they attempted to do by choking him.

Rajcoomar helped by holding him down and holding his nose closed.

When he was comatose, they smuggled him into Sewkarran’s car, bought petrol, drove out of the city, doused Poorun with the petrol and set him alight.

They admitted strangling him, but evidence showed there was fire debris in his lungs, which he must have inhaled.

Koen said that the murder and their attempts to escape detection were amateurish.

At the end of the trial Poorun’s family felt that the sentences were too lenient. The families of Rajcoomar and Sewkarran were relieved.
