Court refuses to reduce Krejcir’s bail

2011-07-14 11:11

The Johannesburg Magistrates Court refused to reduce Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir’s bail today.

Krejcir’s lawyer Eddie Claasen told the court his client wanted his bail reduced from R500 000 to R250 000 so he could pay medical costs.

The court refused, finding that the bail guarantee was not his first option and that he had property valued at more than R20 million.

The case was postponed to August 29 for further investigation.

Krejcir’s bail was extended.

He is charged with fraud relating to a R4.5 million claim he allegedly made to an insurance company after obtaining medical papers stating he had cancer.

Dressed in a black suit, the 42-year-old bowed his head when the application was denied.

Krejcir has been sentenced in absentia in the Czech Republic to six-and-a-half years for tax fraud.

He has also been charged with other crimes, reportedly conspiracy to murder, counterfeiting, extortion and abduction.

State prosecutor Riegal du Toit arrived at court with police officers carrying R5 rifles.

This is part of the 24-hour protection assigned to him after his name was found on an apparent hit-list during a raid on Krejcir’s house.
