Cruising with J9: Don’t tweet and drive!

2011-07-26 07:28

Most people think I’m sweeter than honey ... until they get into a car with me.

If I’m not driving like the speedqueen I am, I’m cussing like a pirate at drivers who drive badly because they are on their cellphones.

I generally tend to drive a route where I don’t have to crawl along in traffic.

Purely because I seem to morph into a venom-spitting demon when I do – because fellow road users are texting, tweeting or BBM-ing while they drive.

Turns out the trend worries the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) as well.
It believes the use of social media and apps on phones could lead to a spike in cellphone usage while driving.

Says spokesperson Gary Ronald: “Drivers should understand that the risk of crashing while texting on a mobile phone is six times more than when driving at the legal alcohol limit.”

The AA supports a cellphone-free zone in all motor vehicles on our roads.

Shouldn’t we all?
