Crusaders deny race-based recruitment claim

2010-05-27 08:18

The Canterbury Crusaders, New Zealand’s Super-14 rugby franchise,

have denied claims that they have a recruitment policy which limits them to only

three non-white players at any time in Super 14 rugby.

Andy Haden, who played 117 matches for the All Blacks, the national

team, said on a TV sports panel show that the seven-time Super-14 champions

Crusaders limited the numbers of Maori or Polynesian players as a matter of

franchise policy.

Haden reiterated his claims off-air, saying the policy had

contributed to Canterbury’s long-standing success in the competition.

Today, Crusaders’ chief executive Hamish Riach denied Haden’s

claims, describing them as “fiction”.
