D-Day for decision on dropping of Malema charges

2011-08-31 17:44

The ANC will announce on Friday whether or not it will drop charges against embattled Youth League leader Julius Malema.

This after Malema’s lawyers brought an application to have his disciplinary charges thrown out on the basis of improper procedure. Malema faces charges of bringing the party into disrepute and sowing divisions in the ANC. Among the charges are his statements on the league’s call for regime change in Botswana.

“By agreement, the charge related to barging into the meeting of ANC officials was removed from the charge sheet of Malema for the sake of convenience.  He will now appear together with the other four respondents (Ronald Lamola, Pule Mabe, Sindiso Magaqa and Kenetswe Masenogi) on this charge on Friday, 2 September 2011, because the charge, the facts, witnesses and representatives of the respondents are the same,” said the party’s national disciplinary committee in a statement.

Should Malema be found guilty on the charge of sowing divisions in the ANC, he will be summarily suspended.
