DA Youth decides on conference date following spats

2013-02-02 22:16

The DA Youth is set to go to its long-overdue elective conference on May 4, its leader, Makashule Gana, said in a statement.

The date was decided on yesterday by the DA Youth National Management Committee and the DA Federal Executive following public spats between some of those intending to campaign for leadership positions.

Some of these spats involved accusations about the frequent postponement of the conference, which was supposed to have happened at the same time as the DA conference in November.

It didn’t take place because the DA Youth structures in some provinces were not functioning properly.

Four positions are up for grabs in May, including that of federal youth leader and chairperson.

The conference will also look at policy and amendments to internal rules and procedures.

Current youth chairperson Mbali Ntuli has confirmed that she will be running for leader, while Johannesburg councillor Toni Molefe is set to challenge her.

In recent weeks there have been public squabbles between those campaigning for either camp, with six-month-old phone recordings doing the rounds of Ntuli remarking on the chances of her possible contenders.

Images of an SMS in which former University of Cape Town SRC chairperson Gwen Ngwenya said Ntuli was unfit for leadership were also distributed among DA Youth members.

Ngwenya was set to contest the position for youth leader before changing her plans to go work in France instead this year.

The spats have also spilled over onto social media networks like Facebook and Twitter, with complaints around these being investigated by the DA.
