DA blasts use of air force as ANC’s ‘own airborne taxi service’

2013-07-16 16:44

The DA has accused Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula of using the SA Air Force as the ANC’s “own airborne taxi service”.

This comes after Mapisa-Nqakula last week flew into the strife-torn Tlokwe – on behalf of President Jacob Zuma – to receive a memorandum from the SA National Civil Organisation and ANC members relating to their problems with ousted mayor Maphetle Maphetle, whom they accuse of corruption.

DA defence spokesperson David Maynier said the ministerial handbook did not allow for this and he would be submitting parliamentary questions on the issue.

According to the Ministerial Handbook: “Air transport provided by the SA Air Force, or any other government department, may not be used by members (of Parliament) for party political engagements, unless such transport enables the member concerned to fulfil important official engagements before or after the party political engagements.”

Maynier said he would ask whether Mapisa-Nqakula had any official engagement before or after the ANC engagement, whether the flight was approved by the secretary of defence, Dr Sam Gulube, what the total cost of this trip was, and whether the SA Air Force has been used for any other party political engagements.

Mapisa-Nqakula’s spokesperson, Sonwabo Mbananga, last week confirmed that she had flown to Tlokwe.
