DA concerned by Free State’s ‘recycled’ MEC for health

2013-03-11 14:40

The Free State provincial government has appointed a new MEC for health without making any formal announcement despite several media enquiries to the office of Free State Premier Ace Magashule.

Dr Ben Malakoane, former CEO of the BloemWater Board, has already been sworn in as a member of the provincial legislature.

This was confirmed by Jongi Ndakana, spokesperson for the provincial legislature.

Malakoane’s appointment was slammed by opposition parties.

Free State MPL Mzwandile Hleko said he was not aware a new MEC was appointed.

“What a recycling. Malakoane used to be the health MEC in the province then he was appointed as the municipal manager of Matjhabeng Municipality. After that he left the province and came back as the CEO of BloemWater. Now he is the MEC again,” he said.

Patricia Kopane, provincial leader of the DA, said this was very concerning.

“Malakoane left the Matjhabeng Municipality (that includes Welkom) as its municipal manager in disarray and the same can be said about BloemWater,” she said.

City Press contacted the office of the premier, but both spokespersons were unavailable.
