DA distances itself from ‘racist’ tweeter

2014-05-09 17:38

There is no space for name-calling and racism in a democratic SA, the DA has said.

The party’s KwaZulu-Natal leader Sizwe Mchunu condemned racist tweets published on Wednesday by a member of the public who likened the ANC to “monkeys”.

“The individual responsible for this tweet has nothing to do with the DA and his views are in no way supported by the [party].”

Mchunu said he supported complaints that had already been laid at the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

“We hope the SAHRC will move swiftly to condemn the responsible individual.”

The Star reported that the tweet read: “Vote DA. That’s it ... simple ... unless you enjoy living in a country run by corrupt monkeys. It’s sad that we still see monkeys voting for monkeys.”

The writer later tweeted: “Every time a white dude mentions the word monkey in a sentence black people go bananas. I’m not a racist. And I have black pals.”

Refiloe Ramogase (@refiloer) then tweeted: “Dear @SAHRCommission pls note hate speech from this @reeboksa employee ... Please address.”

Reebok SA responded in a tweet saying the writer had not worked at the company in the past six months, and distanced itself from the remarks.
