DA heads for court over ‘real jobs’ march to Luthuli House

2014-01-31 18:20

The DA is heading for court after the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) declined its application to march to Luthuli House on Tuesday.

The party planned to march to the ANC headquarters in protest against what it claims is the ANC’s false election promise of providing six million job opportunities.

James Selfe, chairperson of the DA's Federal Council, said in a statement: “We are not going to take this lying down. We have a constitutional right to assemble, demonstrate and picket if we so wish.

“Accordingly, we have approached our legal team to prepare an appeal to be lodged with the magistrates' court in terms of the Regulation of Gatherings Act.”

Last week, party leader Helen Zille said 6 000 DA members would attend the protest rally, which has been dubbed the “March for Six Million REAL Jobs”.

The party has also accused the ANC of intimidation and “threats of violence” during the application process for the march.

“We are not deterred by the ANC’s threats. We have every intention of going through with this march, but will do so responsibly, peacefully and within the law,” today’s statement reads.
