DA leader under fire for not going to Nkandla

2012-11-08 07:04

KwaZulu-Natal DA leader Sizwe Mchunu has come under fire for not joining party leader Helen Zille on her visit to President Jacob Zuma’s home in Nkandla at the weekend, it was reported.

Mchunu’s absence had divided party members and was discussed at the party’s provincial meeting on Monday night, the Mercury reported today.

Police prevented Zille, who is the leader of the Democratic Alliance, and her entourage from inspecting the R248 million upgrades to Zuma’s home on Sunday.

According to the newspaper, party insiders accused Mchunu of bowing to pressure from provincial premier Zweli Mkhize, who chairs the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mkhize called Zille and Mchunu last week about their planned visit to Nkandla and advised them to call it off because “there was likely to be a violent response”.

Mchunu said he could not join Zille on the walk to Nkandla because of other commitments, and not because of death threats.

“All Zweli did, as the ANC political head, he felt he needed to chat to me as the DA head in KwaZulu-Natal and I appreciate the call,” Mchunu told the Mercury.
