DA to run Tlokwe for another month

2013-01-30 13:17

The DA will continue to run the Tlokwe Municipality for another month.

“While a motion for the removal of the mayor was tabled by the ANC, this will only be discussed in February,” DA MP Juanita Terblanche said in a statement on a special council meeting yesterday.

“It is apparent that divisions in the ANC remain deep and could assist the continuation of quality governance in Tlokwe beyond next month as well,” she said.

In the meantime, the council would investigate R267 million in alleged irregular expenditure by the previous ANC administration in the past three years.

“A motion to completely open tender processes to public scrutiny in Tlokwe was tabled by the DA in yesterday’s council meeting,” she said.

The ANC was not immediately available for comment.

Earlier this month, the ANC in the North West said it would not rest until it reclaimed the leadership of Tlokwe.

In November, warring factions in the ANC passed a motion of no confidence in ANC mayor Maphetle Maphetle, who was replaced by the DA’s Annette Combrink.

At the time, the ANC, which wanted Maphetle reinstated, said it hoped Combrink’s appointment could be found to be invalid, as she had accepted her nomination via SMS.

ANC North West spokesperson Kenny Morolong said the ANC in the province would continue to examine all legal processes relating to the matter.
