DA wants probe of Eastern Cape school toilets

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) must investigate sanitation facilities at schools in the Eastern Cape, the Democratic Alliance has said.

DA spokesman Edmund van Vuuren said today the party had asked the SAHRC in a letter to probe the matter.

He said education MEC Mandla Makhuphula told the provincial legislature, in response to a DA question, that 1?049 schools in the Eastern Cape did not have proper toilet facilities.

“This is a human rights violation on an unprecedented scale, with an estimated 260?000 Eastern Cape children attending a school each day without proper sanitation facilities,” Van Vuuren said.

It was unacceptable that almost one in five public schools did not have these basic facilities, he said.

Makhuphula reportedly said 173 schools would receive sanitation before the end of the financial year and another 913 would be serviced by the end of 2015.

“What we need now is a programme of action from the HRC to establish why in almost 20 years of governance 1?049 schools still do not have toilets,” Van Vuuren said.
