DA welcomes CAT scanner probe

2011-03-29 08:42

The DA today welcomed an investigation by the Gauteng health department into the awarding of a contract for two CAT scanners recently installed at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

“This is an admission of irregular procedures and probable wasteful expenditure,” said DA MPL Jack Bloom.

“It seems to me that a particular company was favoured as it is admitted that it was sent a letter of award before the Department Acquisition Council had adjudicated the tenders.”

Bloom said the department should make the findings of the probe public to ensure that all tender procedures were fair and transparent.

He urged the losing companies to take the department to court.

The investigation was launched after the party claimed that R29.45 million was spent, R7 million more than the lowest price tendered for the hi-tech machines.

The scanners were ordered last year from Japan as part of the R157 million project to equip the hospital.

The machines can take 3D images of the human body that are much more detailed than 1D X-ray images.
