DJ Sbu’s success is to avenge his uncle

2015-03-08 16:00

DJ Sbu – Sibusiso Leope to his friends and family – says a lot of his work ethic comes from a desire to “avenge” his late uncle, maskandi star Mahlathini.

“He was touring the world and yet he died poor – and so my parents were reluctant when I said I wanted to do music,” Leope told guests at the launch of his new album and energy drink on Wednesday night.

“I’m so driven because, in a way, I wanted to avenge my uncle. But I also wanna be great – I’m going to be great.”

Tracks from his new album, MoFaya, were introduced at the intimate launch, which hosted just 50 guests and was held at Rosebank’s Universal Studios.

The songs were performed with help from a new duo called Smile, Swazi superstar Nomalungelo and the star of the show, Zahara. The Eastern Cape-born songstress also wowed the crowd – which included Maps Maponyane, Kelly Khumalo and the Jaziel Brothers – with some of her own tracks.

Robbie Malinga, looking suave in a navy-blue suit and sunglasses that stayed firmly on, was the MC.

Leope said he had carefully surrounded himself with “masterful people” and had been driven to co-found TS Records because he and his colleagues “wanted to be entrepreneurs, to own our own catalogues”.

It was a relaxed, fun evening. Indlela Yam’, featuring Zahara and written for Leope’s one-year-old daughter, has all the makings of a hit.
