DRIVE: Wheels that made our heads turn in 2010

2010-12-17 08:45

There were some hot cars this year that made me want to jump out of bed at the thought of driving them around the track or on the open road.

» Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
This has been rated as the performance car of the year by local petrolheads. And who can argue with that roar coming from its V8 engine. This two-door took off with many racing hearts.

» Ford Focus RS
Crowned the green goblin by speedsters for the acid-green body work, all 60 models of the Daddy-O of ST cars were snatched up before they even got to these shores. They also come in racing blue and white.

» BMW M3 Frozen Edition
The epitome of cool, the Frozen Edition is so limited that only 25 units were sold in South Africa.

» VW Amarok
This has shaken the world of bakkies, and given the Toyota Hilux and the Nissan Navara a rude awakening. VW’s first 1 ton vehicle has made its mark as a serious contender for the throne.

» Peugeot RCZ
Now who would have thought a Pug could possess such sex appeal? The sports coupe is the French’s latest attempt at making people think twice about the brand and they seem to have passed the test with flying colours.

» Honda CR-Z
The first sports hybrid to hit SA – or the world for that matter. The CR-Z is a looker of note for greenie beanies. It gets gold stars all round for performance, styling and ecofriendliness.

» Citroën DS3
If there was a fashion award for cars, the DS3 would have claimed it for this year. The stylish compact hatchback is a breath of fresh air for Citroën and though it’s a sure winner with the ladies, the guys think it’s pretty nifty too.

» Ford Figo
This has to be the budget car of the year. It’s cute, nippy and very affordable.

The perfect car for the first-time owner. It comes with all the standard safety features one wouldn’t usually expect for its inviting price tag.

» Audi RS5
So all Audis look the same, but most of them can stir the right emotions. The sleek and sporty RS5 is the latest RS model in the Audi stable, and it’s even more fun than the raunchy RS4. I’ll have one in black please.

» Renault Megane RS
Another French car maker that has been hitting all the right notes with their latest cars. They have gone from bland and boring to exciting and racy, making everyone take them serious with the Megane Renault Sport and Cup models.
