Dalai Lama to give award proceeds to charity

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is to be awarded the 2012 Templeton Prize at a ceremony in London and plans to give the 1.1-million pound ($1.7 million) proceeds to charity.

The 76-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner is to be handed the prize in St. Paul’s Cathedral. It honours people who “affirm life’s spiritual dimension”, the BBC reported.

The exiled Tibetan religious leader is to donate the bulk of the money to the Save the Children charity in India, while setting aside funds to educate Tibetan monks about science.

He was expected to announce the recipients of his donation at the ceremony.

“The Dalai Lama offers a universal voice of compassion underpinned by a love and respect for spiritually relevant scientific research that centres on every single human being,” the Templeton foundation said in a statement.

The Templeton prize, named after late US financier and philanthropist John Templeton, who died in 2008, is awarded annually.
