Dale Steyn likely to play in Proteas’ group decider

Proteas pace spearhead Dale Steyn is likely to be available for South Africa’s final ICC Champions Trophy Group B clash against the West Indies.

The sides clash at the Swalec Stadium on Friday and the winner of the game will join India in the semifinals. India booked their place in the last four with an eight-wicket win against the West Indies at The Oval yesterday.

This is good news ahead of the crunch match after the team lost Morné Morkel midway through the clash against India owing to a quad strain that ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.

Steyn suffered a side strain in a warm-up match against Pakistan in London last week and subsequently missed the opening two games, which South Africa lost and won, respectively.

At training, the 29-year-old looked sharp and bowled at full steam off a short run-up. In his absence, the bowling attack struggled initially before finding their groove against Pakistan. Team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said he was happy with how the fast bowler progressed, but a final call will be made on his availability either tomorrow or on the morning of the match.

“Dale is progressing quite well, he came through his net session today without any discomfort, but the challenge is to watch him overnight to see if he wakes up with any stiffness. If he comes through tomorrow’s net practice he should be available for selection,” said Dr Moosajee.

Left-arm spinner Robin Peterson has not bowled out his quota of 10 overs in both the Proteas’ matches, but Dr Moosajee said the rest of the team had a clean bill of health.

“He’s fine. There are no flu symptoms and no injuries to my knowledge,” said Dr Moosajee.
