Day trip to a new you

2011-01-21 14:39

In January – also known as “Janu-worry” – stress returns with a vengeance because it’s back to reality, and everyone is broke to boot. If you’re starting to feel like you need some time away, then maybe it’s time to take a little rest – “staycation” style.

The obvious staycation choice is a spa day, which is cheaper and closer than a cruise or island getaway, and, if undertaken properly, is equally relaxing.

According to Patrick Main, the manager of the new Pyramid Day Spa in Selby, south of Joburg’s CBD, most people who work in the city have already started booking spa treatments after work “especially now that people want to detox from the festive season”.

The Pyramid Day Spa is a bit of an anomaly because one wouldn’t expect to find a spa, let alone one with beautiful decor, in an industrial part of town.

In fact, the spa is the latest addition to the Pyramid Conference and Venue Centre, where many a Joburg socialite and celebrity partied at the first Duku Duku and Metro FM awards.

Some might say that spas seem to have a pretentious air about them because everyone is hanging about in white robes and slippers, talking in hushed “spa voices”, while carrying glasses of champagne.

But Main argues that this etiquette is part of showing respect to other clients.

The overall design of the spa is geared at making clients feel calm and soothed.

Apart from the full menu you’d expect at a spa, there is a restaurant too. It serves all sorts of fare, from sushi to an out-of-this-world prawn salad. And for those who like their meat, there are also various other dishes to choose from.

Ideally, book in for the day and have a series of treatments with lunch in-between.

While you might only be around the corner from the constant noise and rush of the city – it’ll feel like a concentrated holiday.

If you are anything like me and worked throughout the holiday season, treating yourself to a spa will give you the kick-start you need to face the new year.

I arrived early to take advantage of the sauna and steam shower, as well as to sit in the relaxation garden beside the outdoors spa pool before my treatment.

The heat of the sauna and the chance to chill meant relaxation was already spreading through my muscles before I headed for the treatment room.

I’ve always had an aversion to strangers kneading my body like dough because I often have a sore body to show for it afterwards.

However, the therapists at the Pyramid asked me what intensity of massage I wanted.

I went with a Swedish massage because it sounded interesting. Alas, I had chosen the most vigorous of massages.

Amazingly, though, I felt boneless and more relaxed after the massage than I had throughout the whole of last year. And I’m not exaggerating.

Before eating that gorgeous prawn salad I had a short nap and, sadly, since it’s a day spa, I had to change back into my own clothes and leave – just as I was starting to feel at home.

On the bright side, I left the place looking and feeling new – with my nails, skin and hair done.

I felt as though my mini-break was a holiday, until I got back into my car and into the traffic.
