De Klerk ‘already has a street named after him’

There is already a street named after former president FW de Klerk in Cape Town.

The street was in the suburb of Wesbank, and the FW de Klerk Foundation was not even aware of it, according to a report in today’s The Star newspaper.

Wesbank ward councillor Cynthia Claasen said the street names had been part of the area since its establishment in 2000.

City officials told the newspaper it was uncertain how the street names were chosen.

ANC councillor Tony Ehrenreich was also not aware of it.

“It is an insult that a street in Wesbank is named after De Klerk. We will protest to have it removed from Wesbank,” he was quoted as saying.

After much debate on the proposed renaming of Table Bay Boulevard, the office of the city’s mayor, Patricia de Lille, this week said it would change it to FW de Klerk Boulevard.

De Klerk (79) was president from September 1989 to May 1994. He was the last head of state of South Africa under the apartheid era. In 1993, he won the Nobel Peace Prize along with struggle icon Nelson Mandela for their role in ending apartheid.
